Create a freedom based business even with kids in school & a partner in a 9-5 (video)

Turn your Online Business into a Freedom Based Business

Hi there! We’re just out on a family walk and I thought I’d film this quick video for you. It’s a topic that I get asked a lot by my clients, or just emails that I receive, on Facebook, from women who have kids in school and partners who are in a 9-5.

How do they really achieve the level of freedom and location independence they can see me, and loads of my colleagues, and some of my clients, living as well?

Is it possible to have location independence with kids in school and a partner in a 9-5?

Create a freedom based business even with kids in school & a partner in a 9-5 – Video transcript

Really, this is where you have to get really, really honest with yourself and how you want to live. It can be really difficult to let go of your comfort zone, of the safety net that is there: the income and fixed salaries and obviously the nice house and the schooling and things like that. So really let’s just break it down.

Options available when your kids already go to school

The first point is when your kids are in school. So obviously if you want to leave them in that school, your options are to make the most of the school holidays: go camping on weekends, for example, that kind of thing. But when you really take this a step further, if it really is a deep, deep desire for you to have this level of location independence and freedom-based business, is to look at other options.

For example, do you want to homeschool? Or do you want to go abroad for six months or even just a term or a year, and find schools abroad? Do you want to have your kids in the Green School in Bali, for example, or in a school in the French Alps, or home school them in Asia for awhile, or find a local home-schooling group. There are really so many different options that you can choose, it just takes that courage and getting really clear on what you want and getting past the, “oh, I can’t” or “other people don’t do that” or “that’s not the done thing” and really basically making it happen.

The options when your partner is in a steady 9-5 job

The other thing, of course, is when your husband, your boyfriend, your partner, whoever, is in a 9-5. Again, it’s about finding what you really want for yourself and for you as a family. So does he want to take, for example, three months leave? Dominick once took three and a half months leave so we could go live in France. When we moved to Thailand, it was just on the income from my business, just on one salary. Here, living in Australia, he negotiates with his employer that he can have unpaid leave, because it is so important for us to keep traveling as a family. When he travels for work, we often go with him so that I can just work from somewhere else for a week and experience a different part of Australia.

This is where you have to get really, really honest with yourself and say, “is it just a pipe dream?” or is it just something that you wish you could, but actually you’re just not prepared to do what it takes because of the level of discomfort that it takes to actually move out of that security that you have.

And that is completely fine if that is you! I’m not saying that it is for everyone, because we all choose what we want to spend our money and time on. But if it is a deep, deep yearning that you have, then really look at it, really get the figures together and figure out what it is that you need to do to make it happen. Whether it is taking a break in your partner’s work, or finding an office abroad so you can move to another country, and how you work it with schooling. Whatever it is.

I have a whole series of interviews with women who do this—who have location independence. Either they’re single moms and they homeschool, or they have their kids in school, or they are families who live and travel around the world and have location independence.
