Why you need to stop looking for your purpose (if you want a freedom based lifestyle)

be freeYou’ve seen them too, those posts that promise to help you find your purpose. Finally! You think. You see the light at the end of a long tunnel of confusion.

Finally knowing what it is you’re meant to offer, what your message and package looks like. As the multifaceted and multipassionate person that you are, this is totally understandable. Who doesn’t want to know exactly what they’re here to do?

But, and it’s big but…

How many people do you know who absolutely know why they’re here in this life, what they are meant to do, how they are meant to ‘serve’? I don’t know about you, but I’m guessing most of the people you know are just as human as you are – meaning: they question life, they question what they’re doing, where they’re going and most probably spend a lot of time questioning where they’ve come from and how they ended up this way. To a greater or lesser extent of course, depending how much personal growth has taken place.

Do you really believe that you were born for just one purpose when it comes to your activity?

Think back to things you’ve been passionate about in the past – was it just one thing or have there been many things? Were they all the same thing?
What about your first love, did you think they were the only one for you only to find out, after your broken heart mended, that actually you could fall in love again, and that this was the one, only to find out, after your broken heart mended, that actually you could fall in love again, and that this was the one, only to find out – you get the picture.

This is your purpose in life

I believe that our sole unique purpose in life is to live as best we can.

What does ‘best’ mean? Happy, helpful, fulfilled, honest, sincere, connected, compassionate, giving, peaceful, joyous, loving…
This is freedom. Personal freedom. This is ultimately what we all want more of – the feel good factor. Whatever brings you sincerely closer to this automatically makes you a ‘better’ human being. Yes, I did say makes you ‘better’ and yes, you are good enough as you are. But let’s be honest here, you wouldn’t have chosen this path in life if you weren’t on some quest to grow as much as possible as an individual. And that development isn’t just for self gratification. It’s so that, by living a ‘better’ life, you are able to help others. I know that’s you. Otherwise you wouldn’t care two hoots about reading my blog.

Why you have no one, grand work/business purpose

Your emotional, practical and intellectual life experiences and knowledge all set you up with certain skills. These skills can be used in a myriad of ways. Depending on the choices you make along the way, you could be doing any other number of things. I know, you love what you’re doing, but realistically, is this the only thing you love doing? Have you not changed or shifted your direction along the way? Do you see yourself doing this exact thing until the end of time without any further shifts?

No, didn’t think so.

So back to my point, why you need to stop looking for your purpose if you want a freedom based lifestyle.

Freedom based living is all about going with the flow of life, with what needs to happen here and now. It is not fixed. Is it fluid. It is flexible.

Being stuck on finding your one purpose, if you haven’t yet found it, will drive you into a negative spiral searching for anything or anyone who can tell you exactly what it is you are meant to.
And if you have found it (for now) you’re sure to shift in the (not so distant) future. So what will you do when you’re feeling called to pursue a modified direction? Ah, dilemma, right? One purpose has changed.

So either way, don’t let purpose – finding it or holding onto it, keep you stuck, keep you in a place of self judgement and questioning.

Choose freedom based living. Be flexible like water. Be free as a bird. Really.

Your purpose. What does it mean to you, in 1 sentence?
