Why the “high” of business success doesn’t last – the science

Why the high of business success doesn’t lastYou’ve just had an amazing coaching call with a client / a call with your mentor / mastermind buddy / returned from a business event led by an inspirational leader…you’re on a high and the energy of possibility is palpable, “I can do this!”

Do/did you imagine that once you reached a certain level of success in your business, that you’d be on an all time high? Happy, high energy, positive, all the time?

….but then, at some point (days or weeks later), puff, you flop, literally. It seems like the air has fizzled out of you, that all those dreams and visions of greatness were just that, dreams, with no future.

Real life takes over and you just can’t seem to get back into that all-is-possible state.

The truth is that this happens to everyone. All of us.

You cannot physically live on a constant high, on that adrenaline rush that drives you through exciting times.

On a physiological level your body can’t tell the difference between fear and excitement. Your muscles tighten, your breathing becomes quick and shallow, blood circulation is diverted away from digestion, building and repair and instead is diverted towards your limbs to ensure you have the energy to run away or whatever else you need to do to survive.

So you see, to maintain your health and well-being your body physically needs that ‘downer’ to keep you alive, to be able to grow and repair. Things need to be brought back into balance so that you can re-charge…and then have the energy to go again.

When you’ve been on a high (we’re not talking regular every day happiness here, we’re talking those highs when you’re on fiyah with possibility), that lull that you might experience afterwards, that is a physical need which is often perceive as an emotional/mental downer – you start to question, to doubt, to fear, to get confused, to let that negativity creep back up “I will never do this; See, I tried and failed again; this is so typical of me, I’ll never do it; I might as well forget it”

There’s nothing wrong with you.

In our modern world we’re used to constantly being on the go, being productive, see results and going for it. Growth has happened exponentially, possibilities are endless, technology, we’re able to do much more in a shorter amount of time which means that we cram a lot more into our days. But your body still functions the same way it did many, many ancestors back. It can’t keep up with the rate of your mind and to-do list.

You need to rest. Breathe. Use this time to check in, reconnect with your big WHY, make sure you’re on the right course. Learn to recognize when your bodymind needs and asks for a period of rest so that you don’t interpret this in a way that will bring you into a downward spiral of negative talk which actually has nothing to do with it (your monkey mind is great at finding excuses to bring you down).

Here’s how to grow your business with less stress and a huge amount of respect for your human-ness. Grab your copy here!
