You know the tale of the Three Little Pigs? I didn’t like it as a child for many reasons so never bought it for my daughter, but it’s just appeared in our household as a gift. And so of course I read it to her and the lessons struck me so clearly (it must have been written for entrepreneur parents).
Out to seek your fortune
The Three Little Pigs were sent out “to seek their fortune” (according to Wikipedia – our book says they wanted to go and live in the clearing in the woods, relocating basically to their ideal location. Either way, both theories fit for the purpose of this story).
According to our book, the first pig builds his house of straw, proud that he had chosen a cheap and easy option with which to build his house.
The second pig builds his house of wood, proud that he had chosen a fast option with which to build his house.
The third pig builds his house of bricks, proud that he had chosen a sustainable option with which to build his house.
Now, we all know what happened to the first two houses, right?
Setting up a sustainable business
Cheap and fast. The quick fixes do not lead to long term sustainable success built on a solid foundation. The first two pigs run to the third for shelter and that’s what you’ll end up doing in your business if you cut corners when it comes to investing time and money in the beginning.
I know it sucks to wait. I know you want to see the results now. I know that the journey can seem long and desperate at times.
I know.
Yes you can have quick wins. I’m all for quick wins, it’s what gives you motivation and inspiration to keep going. But you also need to put in the foundational work in to create a solid business. The strategy behind the how needs to be there.

Strategy and business know-how were not in my vocabulary when I started out. I started out with a straw house. I skipped the wood house and went straight for bricks after that.
