How to feel original online (even if you’re quite ordinary)

How to feel original onlineNow that you’ve got your own business is your newsfeed full of the same messages, over and over again – shining health, living your dream life, finding your purpose, making more money in your business etc?

Websites all seem to look same-same.

The same buzzwords are being used without depth of meaning (including that one, buzzwords) and you wonder how on earth anyone can hear what you’re saying in that sea of sameness.

So you overthink, your mind goes on overdrive trying to find that thing

…you need to find clarity around your message, your story, share those parts about you that are weird, different, original in order to be noticed.

But how?

You know your message, you’ve got your story, but you’re not that weird or original. In fact, you feel quite ordinary (on the outside, even though you know how deep you go on the inside). You don’t want to be overly vulnerable and share all your despairs and tribulations. And you don’t have to.

Why being ordinary is original

If you feel boring, unoriginal, where does that come from? Do you feel that way with friends or just online? If it’s the latter, chances are you’re feeling that way due to external impulses that keep telling you you’ve got to have some quirky personality or story to be noticed online, even if you’re quite happy being ‘run of the mill’.

The thing is, the only way you have to be noticed – aka, be original (because original is what stands out in a sea of sameness, right?), is simply by being you (yes, I know, you’ve heard that before but you really don’t feel original, do you?).
You don’t need to be weird or overtly different. Who you are, your story, why you do what you do and showing who you are as a human is what speaks to people. Being human and having the experiences, thoughts and breakthroughs you’ve had is enough. Have you ever inspired anyone, helped anyone already just by being you and helping from that space? Yes? There you go.

Think about it. You don’t choose friends because they’re overly whacky or original do you? Do they choose you because you’re so outrageously unique? No (if you were going to answer yes to all this you wouldn’t be reading this post). They. Just. Like. You. And you just like them. That’s what breeds the know-like-trust factor.

Yes in business you need a certain skill set – you need to know about health if you’re selling health, mindfulness if you’re selling inner peace, business strategy and mindset if you’re helping someone grow their business. But ultimately, from the sea of sameness out there in terms of offerings (have you noticed that nothing is wildly original when it comes to promised outcomes, everyone wants more health/happiness/wealth), the reason your clients choose you over someone else is because they like you. In one way or another, the way you come across resonates with them, they feel comfortable with you and they trust you. They pick you just as your friends pick you and vice versa.

This is how you get noticed online

So stop worrying about how original you are or aren’t. Get clear on WHO you are, WHY you do what you do and go be seen. Get out there, over and over. This is what makes the difference – how often you get in front of your ideal clients giving them a chance to get to know you better. Really. It’s not because you’re wonderfully whacky, it’s because you give them a chance to get to know you, trust you and they’ll pick you when they’re ready to make that change.

We’d love to hear from you – what makes you feel original online, what do you feel makes you stand out?
