‘Come along, you worry too much old boy’ Robin Hood to Little John

Did you know that 80-95% of disease is caused by stress?

That means that only about 5% come from physical causes, the rest is created. We may live longer these days, but quality of life has gone down. As my father said to me the other day ‘When I was young we used to eat what we wanted, we didn’t have all this packaged stuff, we used to go running outside, we didn’t have gyms to run on treadmills, yet people weren’t fat or so sick. Look at people these days, it’s mainly caused by the food we eat’. Spot on dad – but also the fact that we have so many opportunities in life now, we are afraid to miss out, so we go about life at full speed, packing every spare minute with something to do or thinking about the next thing.

Did you know that the youth of today is the first generation that will not be healthier than the last generation?

A happy, bouncy cell is open and ready to absorb nutrients, thereby being able to do what it needs to do. A sad, stressed cell is closed and cannot absorb nutrients – not just from our foods, but also from life itself, from situations, relationships, from all our experiences. Stress is caused by falsely programmed beliefs and expectations. For example, if you’re going to be late for an appointment, you might get stressed, your neighbour might not. We each have programmed reactions.

Yet, we can CHANGE these! For example, when you start feeling the stress come up because the number 2A bus hasn’t turned up on time, take a few deep breaths and ask yourself if it really matters. How bad will the outcome be? You can just apologise and explain why you are late. You are late, you are late, there is nothing that you can do to change it. You can’t go back in time and set the alarm 15 mins earlier. But next time you can. At worst, it doesn’t look too good at the time but people quickly forget about it (do you remember every situation where someone was late? Was it really a big deal?).

A trick someone told me is to ask yourself if you will remember this in 5 years time. Chances are you won’t, so let it go. The more we do this, little by little, this old useless programming will change. Your cells will not be so stressed and closed, too often on ‘fight or flight’ alert. When our cells are continuously called up to be in ‘fight or flight’ mode, they cannot build the body up, but instead chip away at our immune system more and more until we get sick. Ill health happens when the mind is not able to process something. More than the mind can process goes into the body and we get sick.

What can you do today to reduce the amount of stress in your life – maybe taking something out (if you’re doing too much) or adding something in (e.g. a new form of exercise, meditation, have a relaxing massage or other treatment, creating time just for you). When we reduce stress factors in our life and change the way that we react to habitual situations, our bodies are then free to absorb the nutrients from our food, do it’s job properly and serve its optimal function.

For this lifetime, this is your only body, help it to do what it was made to do and help yourself to create your best life yet!

Skip for joy!
