5 steps to beat confusion and know exactly what to focus on next

5 steps to beat confusion and know exactly what to focus on nextNo doubt you’ve noticed that despite dips in motivation, one thing you’re not short of is new ideas for developing your business. They come up whilst you’re working on something else, in downward dog in yoga class, doing the dishes, reading, speaking to a friend, watching a movie, browsing online…

And they’re all great, you can’t choose which to follow first. Which makes the most business sense?

During a lecture given by our Lama one of the questions asked was “what to do when you feel overwhelmed with things to do and don’t know what to do next?”.

I’d not heard this from a Buddhist perspective before so I was interested to hear the reply, and it definitely makes sense applying this to your business.

The Lama’s reply “do what will benefit the people closest to you first”.

So what does this mean for your business?

To clarify, this doesn’t mean prioritize the cleaning and cooking over your work.

It means that with all those gazillion ideas in your mind, which one will create an impact in one person’s life here, now? Go with that one first.

Then expand from there. Nothing wrong with thinking big but remember that when you’re juggling so many ideas and to-dos, the greatest impact usually happens closest to you.

Here’s how to prioritise new ideas:

  1. Tune into your gut, which idea feels the most fun, the most appealing to you?
  2. What is the ONE main thing I want to have happen right now (get my next two clients; take some time to finish my e-course; study etc)
  3. Which idea, on a practical level, will bring you closer to your desired outcome?
  4. Where is the sweet spot between the two answers above? (if there isn’t one, ask yourself: is it time for more results in my business or bringing more fun back in? You’ll generally find that whatever feels most engaging to you will also be the most appealing and useful to your clients).
  5. Jot all your other ideas down for another day so you can get on with this one – break it down into do-able, specific steps

The key here is the first question – which idea feels the most fun? Passion and excitement are literally income gold when it comes to growing your business. When you truly believe in something and are excited to share it with others because you know it’ll make a difference in their lives, others catch onto this energy and become interested. This is how you sell. From a place of sincere belief in what you are offering.

Think back to a success you’ve had in life, what was the energy present around it? If it feels exciting, how can you bring that into your current project?
